| Since its founding
as Mercy Hospital in 1890, quality medical care has been available
to people in Manistee County and the surrounding area. With the
transfer of the management of Mercy Hospital to the Manistee County
Hospital Board of Trustees in 1970, West Shore Hospital was built
at its current location on US-31 just north of the city of Manistee.
Today, West Shore Medical Center has 75 acute-care
beds and is staffed by 325 employees. It has continued to grow
and change with the community and has brought in new physicians
and added specialty services. In January 2001, a $12 million building
expansion project was started that includes addition of a new
surgical wing, expansion of radiology, and renovation of obstetrics.
In March 1998, West Shore Medical Center entered
into a regional network agreement with Munson Healthcare. This
affiliation offers opportunities for joint projects for managing
costs and expanding access to specialty patient care. Benefits
to Manistee area patients include on-site clinics by Munson Healthcare
specialists, mobile MRI services, and North
Flight EMS air transport services.
